Santa Muerte Festival, Saturday 9/14 at Sacred Machine Gallery
Join us this Saturday at the 4th Annual Santa Muerte Festival (check out the Facebook event here) on Saturday Sept 14th at Sacred Machine Gallery. The gallery is renowned for amazing, dark, weird art right on Congress Street. The owner is also part of local triphop, visual feast of a band, Blind Divine, who will be headlining.
“The 4th annual festival celebrates the folklore of the Southwest featuring the strange and beautiful artwork of 22 world-renowned and emerging artists, with an opening evening of musical performances. All-ages and free to the public.”
The musical performances are also coinciding with downtown Tucson’s Second Saturdays (which you can check out here).
And there’s NO cover charge!
King Bowser will start things off from 5-7, perform in between sets and will finish off the evening.

Band Love
We were just on an awesome bill of bands last Saturday and I wanted to share the love a bit. Two from Austin and one from our big brother to the North, Phoenix and all definitely worth a listen.
The Breakup Society
A rockin power pop staple in Phoenix, this band combines hooks and smarts. I loved how Stephen Siegel (Tucson Weekly) summed it up in Soundbites last week:
“The Breakup Society is a band after my own heart. On their MySpace page, the Mesa-based power poppers list The Replacements and The dB’s as influences, and have a song called “Robin Zander.” If I ever meet them, I’m pretty sure we’d be besties.”

Silver Ships
This is a new band from Austin, on the Craftpop label, but they were sixties rock old souls. Multiinstrumentalist leader, Chazz Bessette, brings elements of Harry Nilsson and George Harrison to song styles ranging from folk rock to pop to psychedelia. And when it comes time, watch out for some wailin’ lead guitar. Great harmonies, too!

JoDee Purkeypile
JoDee Purkeypile (yes that’s his real name) is actually the drummer for Silver Ships and Chazz is actually JoDee’s drummer. Love a bit of band incest! I must say they both rocked both their roles. JoDee’s solo project is a soulful extension of sixties power pop and rock. You can tell he’s listened to a lot of Beatles and Kinks – but turns it into something totally JoDee.

So keep and eye and ear out for when these awesome bands come to your neck of the woods!
