Every now and again, Tucson community radio station KXCI goes through the live recordings from their Monday night local music love-fest “Locals Only” and cherry picks some for release. This is the sixth time they’re doing it and, yep, we’re in there! Nestled among many awesome live recordings done in Studio 2A is our three-piece version of “Get With The Times”, recorded on May 30, 2011. This compilation is special because it spans the time Dr. Dan hosted – from 2008 through 2011, after he took over from ten-year host Don Jennings and before he handed the baton to Matt Milner. Another fun fact: we were one of the last bands Dr. Dan booked and one of the first Matt actually hosted.
What makes this so ‘Circle of Life’ for us is that the Locals Only compilation was an early introduction to Tucson music back when we were still living by the sea in Venice Beach and had just started realizing it wasn’t really for us. We were visiting our friend Michael P Nordberg who took us to a KXCI fundraising event. Jamie and I were already scouting Tucson as a possible new home so I took back home two Locals Only compilations to help scope out the music scene. We were impressed enough to keep coming back and lo and behold, here we are to stay!
Other tracks on this release feature a smorgasbord of major Tucson talent including: Brian Lopez (feat. Salvador Duran), The Division Fix, Young Mothers, Dead Western Plains, Gabriel Sullivan & Taraf de Tucson, Amy Rude and Heartbeast, Jazz Telephone, Nowhere Man and a Whiskey Girl, Seashell Radio, and HAIRSPRAYFIREANDGIRLS. Stellar stuff!
I highly recommend checking out Locals Only even if you don’t live in Tucson – it’s on every Monday from 8-10pm with a live performance in Studio 2A at 9pm on 91.3FM or streaming at kxci.org. You can also check out the archived podcasts at http://kxci.org/localsonly/.
Yes and smorgasbord is really spelled with a “d”. Live and learn.
Have an awesome Memorial Day weekend – hopefully with lotsa barbecue!
