And he’s a big supporter of modern bands carrying on the torch, so he likes to interview musicians with all kinds of cool questions. One of his regular features is The Wayback Machine (remember Peabody and his boy??) every Monday. And he’s featured two Modeens!

We’ll be apickin an agrillin at the Cinema Bar, Sunday, June 22nd. Though the Cinema Bar is called the smallest honkytonk in the world, it’s big on vibe and good feelin’s. And it’s *twice* as big if you bring the party to the back patio! In our group of friends, grilling’s an art form - so feel free to judge their work in person - and bring some meat/non-meat of yer own! Click here for the deets.

Aight, time to rock it out again - this time in support of a local haunted house! As many of you know, we’ve been participating in this haunted house for the past 3 years and it keeps getting better and better! But chills and thrills don’t come cheap - so cmon down and put a buck or two in the donation jar!

The 5th Annual Haunted House on Grandview Hill is open on Wednesday, October 31st (Halloween Night) from 6pm - 9pm, locally produced and free to the community. Each year a group of Venice and Mar Vista artists/musicians/performers/costume junkies create a unique spook house with campy theatrics, performance art and good old fashioned chills and thrills. Located in Mar Vista on Grandview Blvd near Palms, this house attracted 300+ visitors last year and is a local favorite.

This year’s theme is “Planet Doom” - think Plan 9 From Outer Space with a time machine: zombies meet aliens, do some time travel and wrestle with vampires (and the odd mummy). Also featured are a live alien band, space art, an intergalactic bar, and space ships. If you want to get involved in the haunted house in various capacities (either as a scary member of the house or behind the scenes), call Jessica at 310-737-1066 to find out about upcoming local meetings.

Carol Kaye - Queen of Bass

We have to give a shout out to one awesome lady who’s been a huge influence on rock n’ roll history - and you probably don’t even know what a huge fan you are! Good Vibrations, These Boots Are Made For Walking, Light My Fire, the theme to Mission Impossible - hooooo boy, that doesn’t even begin to give you an idea of all the bass lines she’s recorded in the 60s and 70s. She’s been playing and teaching professionally (first on jazz guitar) since she was 14 and was the number one call for bass in most big recording, movie and TV studios. ALL while raising three kids.

She’s Carol Kaye and we finally got to meet her recently when Jamie got lessons for Cris for her birthday. What an awesome (and nice!) lady, bass player AND teacher.

She’s been publishing books about learning bass since 1968 and you can actually buy them over her website! If you play bass at all, you gotta check this out - she’s the shizzle:
